Súťaž vznikla z iniciatívy Medzinárodnej hudobnej rady v roku 1969 a jej pôvodný názov bol Medzinárodná tribúna mladých interpretov - IFYP/TIJI. Nemalú zásluhu na jej vzniku mal aj svetovo uznávaný husľový virtuóz Sir Yehudi Menuhin. Je organizovaná pod záštitou Európskej vysielacej únie s podporou Medzinárodnej hudobnej rady. Od roku 2002 nesie názov NEW TALENT. 
Od roku 2003 sa súťaž koná v Bratislave a jej spoluorganizátormi sú Slovenský rozhlas a Slovenská filharmónia - Bratislavské hudobné slávnosti.
 Tento rok súťaž oslavuje 42. výročie svojho založenia.

History
 
The Competition was created on the initiation of the International Music Council (IMC) in 1969 and also thanks to support of the world known violin virtuoso Sir Yehudi Menuhin. Originally it was called International Forum of Young Performers IFYP/TIJI. It is organized under the auspices of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) with the IMC support. Since 2002 it bears the name NEW TALENT. 
Since 2003 the competition is held in Bratislava and its co-organizers are Slovak Radio and Slovak Philharmonic - Bratislava Music Festival. 
This year this competition celebrates the 42nd anniversary of its establishment.

The second round will take the form of two public concerts in Bratislava within Bratislava Music Festival on Friday, 2 December 2011 at 16.00 GMT and 19.05 GMT (chamber music). After the 2nd round, the jury selects three finalists.
 
The final concert will feature three works for soloist with Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Petr Vronsky (Czech Republic). During jury deliberation, Ján Cikker’s Variations on Slovak Folk Song for Big Orchestra will be performed.

On Monday, 5 December 2011 at 19.05 GMT, the final concert featured three concertos with orchestra performed by the finalists. The live concert was relayed by 12 radio stations and heard by approx. 3.1 million listeners.
The jury then named the 2011 "New Talent": Ivett Gyöngyösi, piano, Hungary
