Although the fear that Western societies are gradually losing many of their freedoms has been around for a long time, in the wake of measures being imposed to slow the spread of coronavirus this fear has skyrocketed. The Czech-Slovak civic organisation Paralelna Polis was established some years ago as a response to this perceived loss of society's freedoms. Jonathan speaks with one of its founders, Pavol Luptak, about how it's possible for a society to lose its freedoms while hardly noticing it, and why legal freedoms don't necessarily equate to actual freedoms. What is the strange science of ‘quantum mechanics’ all about, and what makes it different from the other sciences that most of us are more familiar with? We speak with Juraj Tekel, an expert in quantum theory at Comenius University’s Faculty of Physics in Bratislava, whose work in producing science-popularising YouTube videos has also given him experience in presenting the theory in a way that’s understandable for non-experts.
